I’ve definitely had my share of all-nighters, late deployments, sleeplessness, missing family stuff, etc. The cruel part? I’m a software developer; all that stuff I worked on, I stayed up late for, I broke promises for? None of it exists anymore. It’s been replaced by someone else pull all-nighters, unable to sleep, texting his or her spouse “this should be the last night I promise.” Ugh..I’ve had to send a couple of those texts. It’s a red flag for sure.
I know some of us are stuck and are at the whim of our employer; I totally get that. I pray there’s some way to change that. Like it’s said here; when you’re gone, they’ll just get someone else. Or worse, they’ll just give all your tasks to another person and consider it a win that they “reduced headcount.”
The quote also works well if you change "if" to "when."
