“The line in No Way Home about being dressed as a cool youth pastor is significant.

I laughed in the moment. But then I felt uncomfortable and reflective.

This movie is for Millennials & Gen Z, the most irreligious generations in modern history

And yet, they make a joke that got a theater full of laughs based on what a youth pastor looks like. How is it that this joke works in spite of low religiosity?

I may be over analyzing, but I think this is an indictment against how we’ve approached ministry.

We’ve helped created multiple generations of people who know what a cool youth pastor is, but don’t follow Christ.

Maybe I haven’t been clear: people have been close enough to the church to know and presumably interact with a youth pastor with no impact.

Cool is not an appropriate approach to ministry.

We don’t need pastors who wear Jordan’s and know every Drake song by heart. We need pastors who weep over the lost and are invested in discipleship that is theologically deep and answers the questions of our cultural moment.”
