Dan Dewitt on Fundamentalism and Liberalism

“Both liberalism and fundamentalism are never satisfied. They will always demand more. It will never be enough. If you live for them, prepare to be unhappy.”

Dan Dewitt from twitter

I think I’ve talked about this here before but my wife and I used to be “raw food vegans.” It wasn’t a diet – it was a descent into a lifestyle that would have ultimately led us to scratching out our existence by eating rotting apples and trying to go stretches of living at the height of food purity: breatharianism or literally not eating. Just to make this clear; this is LUNACY.

My point being; I’ve known what it’s like to go down a fundamentalist road and it’s not pretty. There is no end, it just keeps asking more of you. Dan uses the word “unhappy” here but I think it’s meant in the extreme. I don’t think he means that you’ll be mildly uncomfortable, I think he means you’ll give and give and never reach the enlightenment you’re searching for.

I wish I would have some of this insight when I was juicing 5lbs of carrots a day. May God grant me insight when dealing with matters way loftier than what I eat.
