Christianity should feel like, “my love for others continues to deepen,” not “my beliefs are more correct than anyone else’s.”
I’ve got a number of Ben Cremer quotes in my ideas folder - this one came up today!
Man, I’ve definitely been there before. Where I had to be right…about EVERYTHING. It looks like dropping little snarky comments that, while are totally correct, aren’t dropped in love. It’s about fighting really hard about really small things. It’s not about understanding, or compassion, or empathy; it’s about making sure the other person acknowledges that I was right. When another persons is destroyed by what I said but I still “won.”
Isn’t it funny that the mentality that feels like that doesn’t actually feel good? Does anybody leave a particularly hot argument on social media feeling great? There’s a protecting of the ego that happens that doesn’t actually protect the ego at all. Ironically…being loving protects the ego. Forgiveness and grace, while totally difficult in the moment; ultimately lead to the greatest of feelings. I know it’s personally helped me here on this page.
