I finished another notebook! 🥳

A LOT of what you see here is the polished and final art that I make but buried in these notebooks are my on-site sermon notes, ideas, lists, experiments, failures, etc. Some sketches are full sermon notes, a lot of them are unfinished and sometimes I take really terrible notes in effort to make something later. Every creator I know has their workshop where they hide all the mistakes and these are mine. Each time I start a new one I find a sticker to put on it, put the month and year and then go to town! I’m usually working through a few different notebooks at any given time because I tend to misplace them quite a bit. This one in particular I’d thrown in a bag and lost for a number of months!

My art habit/discipline started with these. If you’re struggling to make art, what worked for me was to buy these tiny notebooks and commit to putting *something* in there each day. I think the trick is to make it so small you can’t help but do it. Draw a box or a smiley face or something that’s easy and increase the challenge once you have the habit down. Don’t rip out the pages of the ones you don’t like and keep the notebooks you finish. You’ll be amazed how fast they start piling up. The collection I have here I started some time around 2016.

I really like the moleskine cahier pocket journals. They can be a little pricey but I like the off-white paper and the seem is stitched not stapled. There’s a pocket in the back and I keep an eraser guard back there. Field Notes makes a pretty good journal as well.
