When outrage is the goal, logic is the first victim

“When outrage is the goal, logic is the first victim.”

Phil Vischer from the @holypostpodcast

The thing I’ve noticed about twitter is that controversy ignites and spreads *really* fast. The news is slow and I almost feel like the other social media platforms are slow where twitter is machine that is primed for outrage. This week, Tish Warren Harrison (who I’ve drawn before) came under fire for an article about stopping virtual church and was excoriated for it. I wish things were more up for discussion but the shots come hard at people and while the blowback we see in public is rough, I can only image what horrors lurk in the emails and DM’s that are crafted in private.

I don’t have a solution, I guess I’m just venting? This quote sums it up for me because when people are outraged I don’t think they are evaluating new information anymore? I know for me, when I feel defensive and when I feel angry it’s a sign to myself that I’m not in the position in evaluate or discuss. When the house is on fire or someone is threatened that seems like the right posture. When someone says something I don’t agree with on twitter that kind of reaction seems…unproductive. I don’t know man, I wish we could treat each other better.

NOTE: Since it’s Phil Vischer, I feel like I had to add *something* different. It would be too on the nose to include a veggie tale character and while a ukulele might be appropriate, I cannot draw musical instruments. Or bicycles. Or cats. Anyway, if you wondering why there’s a specific oddity in today’s drawing; that’s why.
