If something in the Bible is weird, it’s probably important

“If something in the Bible is weird, it’s probably important.”
I used to gloss over the Old Testament. There’s a lot of names and rules and oddities and really I just wanted to get to the stuff that “I could use for myself” in the New Testament. It was a terrible and frankly boring way to read the Bible. It’s probably why I didn’t spend that much time in it. For me, the Bible didn’t really come alive until I started to really behold the absolute bonkers craziness of it. I find the Old Testament is WILD. There’s not other way to say it. In there we see revenge and betrayal beyond any modern comprehension. It describes people who find redemption only to be severely punished in the next book and vice versa. There’s murder and death and massacres that defy description or illustration.
And then we get to the supernatural stuff. 😳
Fire and water that are everlasting and spring from a source beyond human understanding, angels and demons, deviations from time and space and manipulation of gravity and matter that we don’t even have the words to describe are all found in the Old Testament. It’s amazing. I appreciate theologians like Dr. Heiser that not only help to explain what we are reading; but allow us to ponder the wonder of it all.
It’s strange and it’s weird on purpose; we are being shown things we don’t have the language to describe or the brain matter to understand. I certainly don’t comprehend what I’m reading but friends; I am here for it.
Note: It appears Dr. Heiser is currently undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. I certainly want to pray for him during this time. If you want to read something way better than what I put together here; search out his blog and read “Things I’ve Learned.”
