There is something weird and almost certainly wrong seeing a preacher of the Gospel wearing a fifty-thousand dollar watch.

Ok, I haven’t read the book yet, but Katelyn Beaty just came out with “Celebrities for Jesus” and I’m really interested to read about this strange celebrity culture within the Christian community.

Ben started this conversation over at @preachersnsneakers and while you may think $1000 sneakers to be excessive you haven’t seen anything until you check out some of the watches over at @prophetsnwatches. Some of them are spectacularly expensive. 😱

Sometimes I talk about modesty on this page and unfortunately that usually devolves into hiding women’s shoulders or something like that. I think a more interesting conversation is what owning and wearing luxury means to the person that owns and wears the luxury. I can understand buying a well-made watch, one that you can hand down your kids but to flaunt it; to wear it in the pulpit is such a different conversation. It’s easy to evaluate a sermon on the merits of the sermon but being a pastor, being a leader is so much more than that. Are preachers interested in the trappings of being a celebrity? How should we address that as the church?

I dunno, I could be wrong. I like nice things too. I guess I have to check my own heart in this because while I don’t have a luxury watch or expensive sneakers my three times a week chipotle habit could be seen as excessive and luxurious to someone who is really struggling to buy food for the month. 🤔
