If I asked you about love I'd get a sonnet

“…if I asked you about love I'd get a sonnet, but you've never looked at a woman and been truly vulnerable. Known that someone could kill you with a look. That someone could rescue you from grief. That God had put an angel on Earth just for you. And you wouldn't know how it felt to be her angel. To have the love be there for her forever. Through anything, through cancer. You wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in a hospital room for two months holding her hand and not leaving because the doctors could see in your eyes that the term "visiting hours" didn't apply to you. And you wouldn't know about real loss, because that only occurs when you lose something you love more than yourself, and you've never dared to love anything that much. I look at you and I don't see an intelligent confident man, I don't see a peer, and I don't see my equal. I see a boy.”

Robin Williams as Sean Maguire in “Good Will Hunting.”

You want to hear something crazy I learned recently? I’m not here to bash men but here’s the conclusion of a study that was done back in 2009:

*Female gender was found to be a strong predictor of partner abandonment in patients with serious medical illness. Women composed 53% of the patient population. Divorce or separation occurred at a rate similar to that reported in the literature (11.6%). There was, however, a greater than 6-fold increase in risk after diagnosis when the affected spouse was the woman.*

In plain words, the divorce rate is the same amongst couples where one of the people get sick - but it’s overwhelmingly men who leave the marriage at that point. A 6-fold increase.

What in the world…

There’s so much talk about women online. Maybe my feed is saturated with more than others; that’s totally possible. But there’s so much talk of “women should stay home, women should submit, women can’t do this or that.” We’re missing it friends, we’re missing it.

I’m not going to spend the time my wife and I have here worrying about who makes the sandwiches or who breaks the tie. I’m going to dare to love her more than myself. ❤️
