When things happen to us, abusers will often gaslight their victims until things seem “normal.”

There is nothing “normal” about abuse.

But abusers must make their victims feel this way in order to keep them quiet.

When I think about the church and what happens behind closed doors, I wonder if there are things to remain silent about?

My answer is no. I can’t imagine a single experience that I would have or my kids would have or my wife would have that we would be compelled to remain silent about? But it should be that way almost anywhere right? I wouldn’t expect that there would be things that would happen at school that should remain in silence? I wouldn’t expect any interpersonal interaction at work needing to be silenced?

When I think of the interpersonal dealings in my life - none of them have been made better with silence. To Isami’s point; normal = silence. We don’t need to talk about “normal” because everyone knows “normal.” But abuse isn’t “normal” and neither should be silence.

For people commanded to deal in truth, let’s deal in truth. We don’t protect the church by remaining silent, we sandbag it.

After all - what are we protecting with being “normal?”
