“In marriage, being able to talk about everything is a better measure of success than agreement on everything.”
I said this…like a month or so ago?
I don’t give a lot of marriage advice but @womnofvalor asked:
“How important is it for a husband and wife to agree theologically? I mean secondary and tertiary issues. I was always taught that spouses needed to see eye to eye on everything or else the marriage couldn’t work. Is that true?”
And that was my response. Spouses should talk to each other.
People are *annoyingly* complicated and the most annoyingly complicated thing about us is that we’re all just terrible at communicating with each other; especially with our spouses.
Whenever someone asks for advice, almost 9 times out of 10 I reply “I dunno, have you tried talking to them about it?”
And it seems like so many times the response back is something like “oh I could never” or “it’s not that simple.”
We look for all these techniques and tactics, we’re told all of this stuff that we have to do to have successful relationships when just learning how to talk to each other would bring about so much change.
I would venture to say that couples that agree on everything theologically, probably don’t talk about everything theologically. I appreciate when my wife pushes back on something that doesn’t sound right. We talk about it…I’d say it makes us both better. It’s ok to be wrong and her to be right. And I don’t know how we’d get there without talking about it.
At least that’s my experience. What’s yours?
NOTE: I don’t usually draw myself…it feels so pretentious. 😅 And that picture of me has way more hair than I actually have ha ha.
