All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than…

“All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
The amended 7th commandment of animalism from “Animal Farm” by George Orwell
So…spoiler warning?
Animal Farm is a short satirical novel about the perils of communism set against the overthrowing of an English farm by the animals within. Long story short, they rebel against the humans, power is consolidated with the pigs, and over time they come to resemble the humans; the very idea of the thing they were rebelling against. The pigs end up walking on two legs, sleeping in beds, and start drinking and are justified in doing so because of this commandment which they themselves crafted.
It doesn’t end well as you can imagine.
I could do a whole separate caption on the idea of propaganda contained within but this quote has always stuck with me and I find myself saying it when I see situations that reek of “Not for me but for thee.”
Environmentalists that tell us to reduce our lifestyles while they inflate theirs.
Business owners that rails against forgiving student debt while taking advantage of forgivable PPP loans for themselves.
And the worst…
People that claim all of the love, forgiveness, grace, and peace that Jesus offers while not affording it to those that need it. Spend a day on Christian twitter to see what I’m talking about.
So many times it just sounds like “Look, we’re all created equal. Just some of us are created more equal than others.”
I’m sure there’s areas in my life where this is true for me. I pray Jesus would expose them and allow me to remove it.
Note: The pig really should be drinking and not smoking but the image of a cigar smoking pig in a suit has just really stuck with me. 😅
